to produce something tangible.
Innovation Ecosystem Design, R&D Portfolio Guidance, and Technology Landscape Review — with published prices, fixed timelines, and written deliverables.
Back to HomeOur methodology
Every Thornfeld engagement follows the same core structure, regardless of which service is being delivered. We begin with a focused diagnostic — understanding what the client is actually trying to decide or address, not just what they have asked for. This matters because the question as initially framed and the question that actually needs answering are often not the same.
From the diagnostic, we move into active analysis: primary conversations with client stakeholders, review of relevant internal information where applicable, and structured external research. The analysis is organised around a defined framework — not freeform — which makes the output more consistent and the reasoning more transparent.
Final outputs are written documents, not presentations. We prepare them with the assumption that they will be read by people who were not in the room when the work was done, and that they need to remain useful for at least one to two planning periods after the engagement closes.
Innovation Ecosystem Design
Helps organisations create internal conditions that allow new ideas to surface, develop, and reach viability. This service maps your current innovation pathways, identifies barriers, and designs a structured yet flexible ecosystem — including idea intake channels, evaluation criteria, and resource allocation guidelines.
Delivered through co-design workshops and a documented ecosystem framework. Suitable for companies that want innovation to be part of how they work, not a separate initiative. The co-design approach means your team helps build the output, which improves both the quality of the framework and your team's ability to use it independently afterwards.
What this engagement includes
- Current-state innovation pathway mapping
- Barrier identification and analysis
- Co-design workshops with relevant stakeholders
- Idea intake channel design
- Evaluation criteria framework
- Documented ecosystem framework delivered as written report

R&D Portfolio Guidance
For companies with active research and development efforts, this service provides an external review of portfolio balance, resource allocation, and strategic alignment. The engagement evaluates projects against criteria including market relevance, feasibility, and strategic fit.
Delivered as a portfolio assessment report with recommendations for rebalancing or sequencing. Helps leadership teams make thoughtful choices about where to invest development effort — rather than continuing with the existing portfolio by default.
What this engagement includes
- Review of all active R&D projects against defined criteria
- Portfolio balance assessment (risk, time horizon, strategic alignment)
- Resource allocation analysis
- Sequencing recommendations for project prioritisation
- Written assessment report with structured findings and recommendations

Technology Landscape Review
A structured scan of emerging technologies relevant to your industry, evaluated through the lens of practical applicability rather than trend-following. The service identifies technologies worth monitoring, experimenting with, or investing in, based on your organisation's readiness and strategic goals.
Delivered as a visual landscape map with a prioritised watch list and short commentary on each technology. Designed to inform rather than overwhelm — the output is selective, not comprehensive for its own sake.
What this engagement includes
- Structured scan of industry-relevant emerging technologies
- Applicability evaluation against your readiness and goals
- Categorised watch list (monitor / experiment / invest)
- Visual landscape map
- Short written commentary on each shortlisted technology
